Aegis Wing Review

I have really enjoyed Xbox Live Arcade. It reminds me of the games that I fell in love with at a young age by both bringing back tried and true classics as well as offering up new arcade titles. Aegis Wings is a new title out this last week and returns us to the days of side-scrolling shooters like Gradius. But there is a slight twist…

Three students named Scott Brodie, Danny Dyer and Matt Monson developed this game during a summer internship at Microsoft. These guys talked their way into letting Carbonated Games help them to put out their very own Xbox Live Arcade title. Aegis Wings is a 2-D scrolling shooter that was designed as a multiplayer game and features four player capability, either locally or online.

The biggest change that Aegis Wings has to offer over other shooters is the ability to link together with up to three other ships during the game to form a larger and more powerful ship. This leaves one player in charge of flight with the other attached players manning the guns. Pretty cool idea fellas.

Graphics include some 3-D objects in the backgrounds while the player and enemies are small and uninspired. The audio is just as bland as well as the boss battles which consist of “dodging the attacks and shooting the weak spot” style of gameplay. There are some clever special weapons such as a shield that deflects attacks back at the enemy and a wormhole that incapacitates enemies and their attacks.

In the end Aegis Wings is the same standard shooter that we have all seen since the early days of gaming. It is not original, pretty, or innovative, but it was made buy students who have a passion and desire for gaming. The full version of this game is free of charge so support your peers, go download this title, and give it a play.
