BlackSite: Area 51 Preview

BlackSite is an arcade shooter coming from Midway and is due out this September. Xbox Live members were treated to a demo available in the Marketplace last week and I had a chance to spend a little time and see what we might have to look forward to this fall.

The demo is really short and consists of just two areas, a gas station and mini-mall. The player arrives in the small town of Rachel, Nevada near Area 51, along with two squad-mates. It is a rainy night and by the looks of the burning fuel trucks and lack of living people, not all is right here in Rachel.

Your squad-mates can be positioned by pressing the Right Button to do basic things like take cover or open doors. But this is no strategy shooter and when it’s go time, your allies will hold their own and you needn't worry too much about them. BlackSite uses a morale feature so as long as you are accurate and not taking much damage, the team will work together. Start waiving your gun around like a maniac or get rode on by some aliens and your team will start to freak out. They will lose accuracy and even go down. The nice part about BlackSite is that you don’t have to worry about morale too much because it is reset after every battle, hence the emphasis on arcade shooter.

Both the graphics and audio in the demo are slick. The environment is destructible and when bullets start flying in the mini-mart, you will definitely know. Signs, windows, vending and slurpie machines are all destructible as well as the concrete pillars out front. Gas tanks take too much damage and blow cars apart, aliens are running around, and it is just a good amount of chaos for the player to jump into.

The second section of the level is much shorter and less interactive but lends to the most memorable scene in the demo. After laying waste to a wave of aliens in the streets of the mini-mall, their big brother falls out of the sky and smashes into the mall. The resulting slow motion shockwave looks awesome and cars get tossed passed the player as the new enemy makes his presence known.

So if you have Xbox Live you should download this demo to at least check it out. Again, Blacksite: Area 51 will be out in September and has the potential to be an enjoyable, action-packed shooter.
