Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars Review

Along with first-person shooters, real-time strategy games just seem to be made for the PC. The mouse and keyboard combo in both these genres is fast and precise, two things that are needed in such games and translate poorly to console controllers. C&C3’s controller setup is actually decent, but it is still the biggest drawback to the Xbox 360 version. It can just be too slow and inaccurate when trying to find units, select individual troops, or navigate the map. For the most part I was actually impressed at how well the controller was put to use for the genre. Let’s just say I was expecting much worse.

Tiberium Wars has slick FMV cinematics coupled with live-action scenes staring Michael Ironside and Billy Dee Williams that paces the story nicely and keeps it entertaining. The production on these live-action scenes is high while still maintaining a nice B-movie style feel to them. The story mode is 38 missions long with two different campaigns to play through. Missions are varied and fun, but there is nothing new for experienced RTS players to be impressed by. After the story mode is over players can roll online for some more action as C&C3 offers five different multiplayer modes and never any lag. The different factions are well balanced so online matches never feel one sided.

The graphics are not as good as its PC counterpart but they aren’t bad enough to distract from the game. I did run into some minor AI issues however, both with my own units and enemy units. Once I had a vehicle factory near a beach and as vehicles were being pumped out they started piling up. I could not get them to navigate away from their spawn point and eventually I had to spend some more cash and resources to get them airlifted out of the area. I am not a huge RTS fan or that well versed in the genre but I had a good experience with C&C3. While not perfect, fans of RTS games only have a few options on the Xbox 360 and Command and Conquer 3 should be at the top of the list.
